Learn the difference between limited tort and full tort car insurance in Pennsylvania and how each may affect an injury claim.

Pennsylvania drivers can choose between limited tort and full tort when buying car insurance. That choice can have a major impact after an accident.

Full tort generally gives you  the right to pursue compensation for pain and suffering after an accident caused by another driver.

Limited tort usually costs less in premiums, but it can restrict your  ability to receive certain damages, such as pain and suffering, unless an exception applies.

One of the most important exceptions to limited tort involves serious injury. If the injuries meet the legal threshold for serious injury, a person with limited tort may still be able to pursue pain and suffering damages.

Other exceptions to limited tort may also apply depending on the circumstances, including certain accidents involving drunk drivers, uninsured vehicles, or out-of-state vehicles.

This is why it is important not to assume that limited tort automatically prevents a claim. The details of the crash, the injuries, and the insurance policies all matter.
