Learn how truck driver fatigue contributes to serious commercial vehicle accidents and what evidence may help prove fatigue after a crash.

Truck Driver Fatigue Can Make Large Vehicles Even More Dangerous

Truck driver fatigue is one of the most serious safety concerns in commercial trucking. A tired driver may react more slowly, drift between lanes, miss stopped traffic, or fail to recognize changing road conditions.

Commercial truck drivers can work long hours and travel significant distances. Federal hours of service rules limit driving time and require rest periods, but violations can still happen.

Fatigue can be caused by long shifts, overnight driving, irregular schedules, pressure to meet delivery deadlines, untreated sleep disorders, or failure to take required rest breaks.

Evidence of fatigue may include electronic logging device records, driver schedules, dispatch records, fuel receipts, toll records, GPS data, and cell phone activity.

In some cases, fatigue is not only a driver issue. A trucking company may share responsibility if it encouraged unrealistic delivery schedules, ignored safety concerns, or failed to properly supervise drivers.

Truck fatigue crashes can be especially severe because tractor-trailers and other commercial vehicles require more time and distance to stop than passenger vehicles.
