Why Trucking Company Records Matter After a Serious Accident | Hourigan Kluger & Quinn

Learn what trucking company records may reveal after a serious commercial vehicle accident.

Company Records Can Reveal Problems That Are Not Obvious at the Crash Scene

After a truck accident, the crash scene only tells part of the story. Trucking company records may reveal what happened before the truck ever reached the roadway.

Important records can include the truck driver’s qualification files, hiring records, training records, safety policies, inspection reports, maintenance logs, dispatch messages, GPS data, electronic logging records, and prior violation history.

These records may show whether the truck driver was properly trained, whether the company monitored safety issues, or whether the truck had known mechanical problems.

Company records may also show whether the truck driver was under pressure to meet an unrealistic delivery schedule.

In some cases, these records help identify a pattern of safety problems within the trucking company, rather than an isolated mistake by one driver.

Because trucking companies control many of these records, early preservation is important. Some records may be overwritten, discarded, or difficult to obtain later.
