Injuries Caused by Poor Lighting on Commercial Property | Hourigan Kluger & Quinn
Learn how poor lighting can contribute to falls, assaults, and other injuries on commercial property in Pennsylvania.
Poor Lighting Can Make Dangerous Conditions Even Worse
Poor lighting can turn an otherwise manageable hazard into a serious danger. In places like parking lots, stairwells, hallways, sidewalks, apartment complexes, and commercial buildings, lighting can play an important role in safety.
When lighting is inadequate, people may not see wet floors, uneven pavement, broken stairs, curbs, debris, ice, or other hazards in their path.
Poor lighting may also increase the risk of injury in areas where businesses or property owners should reasonably expect foot traffic, especially during evening hours.
In Pennsylvania premises liability cases, a key question is whether the property owner knew or should have known about the unsafe condition and failed to take reasonable steps to fix it.
Evidence may include photographs, surveillance video, maintenance records, prior complaints, lighting inspection records, and witness statements about how dark the area was at the time of the incident.
Property owners are not automatically responsible for every injury, but they may be liable when unsafe lighting contributes to a preventable accident.
