Can You Choose Your Own Doctor After a Workplace Injury?

Learn how doctor choice works after a workplace injury in Pennsylvania and why medical treatment records are important.

Doctor Choice After a Work Injury Can Affect Treatment and Documentation

After a workplace injury, medical treatment is one of the most important parts of a workers’ compensation claim.

In Pennsylvania, employer responsibilities and employee rights may depend on whether the employer has posted a valid list of designated healthcare providers.

If a valid provider list applies, an injured worker may be required to get treatment from one of those listed providers for an initial period. If there is no valid list, or after the required period ends, the worker may have more flexibility in choosing a medical provider.

Medical documentation can affect the entire claim. Records may show the diagnosis, work restrictions, treatment plan, prognosis, and whether the injury is connected to job duties.

Workers should report all symptoms accurately and explain how the injury happened at work. Gaps in treatment or inconsistent histories can create problems later.

It is also important to keep copies of medical records, work restriction notes, employer communications, and insurance paperwork.
