Estate administration is the legal process of collecting, protecting, valuing, managing, and distributing a deceased person’s assets and resolving that person’s outstanding debts, taxes, and other obligations. In Pennsylvania, estate administration may include probating a will, opening an estate with the Register of Wills, handling the process of a Revocable Trust or Living Trust, obtaining Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration, notifying beneficiaries and creditors, preparing an inventory of estate assets, filing required tax returns, paying valid claims, and making distributions to heirs or beneficiaries. Depending on the size and complexity of the estate, administration may also involve real estate transfers, business interests, investment accounts, family disputes, or litigation. Proper estate administration helps ensure that the decedent’s wishes are carried out and that the personal representative complies with Pennsylvania law and applicable federal requirements.
